What you need to know to fully understand the short stories:
Ringolf and Sashiro have been neighbors for several years, they’ve been good friends for just as long. Sashiro likes and cherishes Ringolf, whereas the other boy only feels offended by Sashiro's behavior towards him. He thinks that Sashiro looks down on him and this feeling increases through years and becomes jealousy of Sashiro over trivial matters such as height, hair color etc.
When Ringolf doesn’t manage to get an apple from a tree Sashiro fetches it for him. But the smaller boy feels humiliated. He tells Sashiro not to bother him and that Sashiro doesn't know anything about him at all. The boy lies by saying he doesn't like apples but hates them as he does Sashiro...
Since he is stubborn, he tries to prove his words by ignoring Sashiro and refrained from eating apples. However, the latter fails because apples have been his obsession since he was but a toddler. So he eats them secretly – or at least he tries to…
7 years later Ringolf accidentally greets Sashiro, who interprets this as a sign that Ringolf forgives him. Since Sashiro's feelings for Ringolf haven't changed, he starts trying to get closer to his neighbour childhood friend... Ringo, on the other hand, regrets that he was so careless, because once again Sashiro is back to bullying him.
